The funding gap

Only 5.2% of grants for Africa from U.S. foundations reach local organizations. Meanwhile, the vast majority of African non-profits struggle to secure the resources they need to sustain impactful programs.

Despite their potential, these organizations are often overshadowed by larger international non-governmental organizations (INGOs), which dominate the funding landscape.

The need for local talent

Sustainability in African non-profits hinges on building local fundraising expertise. Yet, the skills and knowledge required to navigate the complexities of international development funding are often inaccessible to many organizations on the continent.

Why Funding Africa?

We meet Africa’s unique needs.

Funding Africa serves as a catalyst for change. We bridge the gap by empowering local organizations with the tools, training, and strategies they need to succeed in an evolving funding landscape.

Our Founder

Iman Lipumba

Iman Lipumba is helping reshape how African organizations access and grow funding—on their own terms. A champion of African-led change, she believes the people closest to the challenges are best placed to design the solutions—and should be the ones leading and resourcing that change. Yet today, less than 6% of U.S. foundation grants for Sub-Saharan Africa reach African organizations. That gap isn’t just a number—it’s a call to action. Iman founded Funding Africa to answer that call: equipping African and Global South nonprofits with the tools, language, and strategies they need to win in a funding system not built for them. Whether you’re trying to secure your first six-figure grant or build a long-term fundraising strategy, she brings clarity, calm, and a track record of helping organizations grow without compromise.

Iman has helped organizations unlock tens of millions of dollars from major funders and build values-aligned systems that actually work—for the team and the mission. Her coaching combines strategic fundraising insight with a deep understanding of the emotional and structural weight African leaders carry in philanthropy. Through practical tools, honest conversations, and a “we’ve got this” spirit, she helps organizations move from surviving to thriving. Her ethos is simple: for Africa, by Africans. We don’t need saviors—we need partners. We already have what it takes. If you’re ready to fundraise with more confidence, strategy, and joy—Funding Africa is here to walk with you.
